August 1913 saw the massing of Imperial Russian armies to invade Central Europe, urge on by their desperate western allies. Against the province of Prussia the Tsar was moving three armies, while his cousin, the German Kaiser, could only spare one army, the Eighth, to defend the heartland of German nobility. But the Eighth Army was able to utilize its interior position and dense rail net to manuver against its larger, but lumbering foe. The campaign that ensued was a rapid and decisive series of battles, both reminiscent of the Napoleonic past and the armored blitzkreig future. Defeated at first at Gumbinnen, the Germans struck back at Tannenberg, encircling the bulk of a Russian Army. The Eighth Army, reinforced from the west, then proceeded to drive the other two Russian Armies off of German territory in the Battle of the Masurian Lakes. While historically a lopsided German victory, the campaign was far more closely run than it would appear, and if the ponderous Russian jaws had closed, disaster would have hung over Germany. Even the Eight Army's commander became terrified that indeed, "The Cossacks are Coming!"
